Health and Safety
Every education institution shall foster and maintain a social climate and physical environment wherein health, well-being, non-violence and safety are an important part of everyday work and learning. Such an environment should be:
- A place of safety, free of any form of stigma, discrimination or violence in which the human rights of all students and employees are protected.
- A place in which rigorous procedures relating to hygiene and health are followed in accordance with national norms.
First Aid
First aid kits and necessary protective equipment (for example latex and heavy-duty gloves) shall be available for emergency use at The Business School. The kit is located in the Administrative Office.
Creating a Sanitary and Safe Environment
The Business believes that it is our responsibility to have a safe and sanitary environment, and as such we have outlined the following:-
- Smoking is not permitted.
- Drug and alcohol use is not permitted.
- Gender segregated sanitary facilities and clean water points are installed, and are maintained in good working order.
- Janitorial cleaning supplies are provided.
- Asbestos is not used in school buildings.
- Buildings are suitably maintained and constructed.
- Appropriateness of furniture, and class size are maintained.
- Canteen policy and food safety regulations are upheld.
- Suitable fire fighting equipment is provided.
- Emergency/evacuation plans are clearly displayed.
Evacuation Plan
The purpose of this plan is to ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of the College premises during emergency situations such as fire and bomb scares.
In an emergency (such as a fire) calmly alert all persons and quickly leave the building.
- Do not return for any reason (e.g. to retrieve a purse or a laptop).
- Close as many doors that you can behind you. Do not open doors unless you are certain there is no fire behind the door. You may place your hand on the door to check for heat/warmth.
- Call 911 as soon as possible.
- Report to the evacuation area across the road (Brickdam).
- Wait for a roll call before you leave or until your name is recorded by the College’s personnel.
Evacuation (Bomb Scare)
- You must be aware of the nearest exits and the evacuation area.
- If requested assist anyone who appears to need direction or assistance.
- Shut doors but do not lock.
- Proceed quickly to the evacuation area across the street.
- Do not leave the area until you have been accounted for and receive permission to leave by the College’s personnel.
Evacuation Route
The College has three evacuation routes: two at the back of the building and one at the front. These routes are clearly outlined on the College’s premises and on the notice board.
